In the 48 hours since Congressman John Yarmuth announced his retirement from the post he’s held since 2007, Sen. Morgan McGarvey launched a campaign garnering a large first-day of contributions and a wide list of Louisville Democratic endorsements.
Mere minutes after Yarmuth announced he would be retiring on Tuesday, McGarvey put the wheels in motion on a campaign that has been years in the making.
On Wednesday, 21 hours into the campaign for the Democratic nomination to the 3rd Congressional District, which includes all of Louisville, McGarvey announced he had secured $160,000 in campaign contributions. Announcing the dollar figure is a clear sign to other Democrats thinking there’s room in the race to stay out.
McGarvey sent another message to potential Democratic contenders with a large list of Democratic endorsements.
Names on the list include Former Mayor and Lt Gov. Jerry Abramson, Metro Council President David James, Former State Auditor and Lt. Gov Crit Luallen, Former Congressman Mike Ward, Sen. Gerald Neal, and Sheriff John Aubry among others.
“Congressman Yarmuth has been an outstanding representative,” McGarvey said in a news release. “I’m running because I want to ensure Kentucky continues to have a progressive voice in D.C.
“I’m a working dad of three kids, so confronting so confronting the existential threat of climate change, making climate change more affordable, and implementing affordable pre-K, ending generational poverty and building an economy that works for everyone are all why I’m in this race,” he continued. “I’m so honored to see endorsements from so many Kentucky leaders who I’ve worked with on some of the toughest fights like: preserving marriage equality, criminal justice reform, defending access to healthcare and protecting choice.”
Rep. Attica Scott, D-Louisville, launched a primary challenge to Yarmuth earlier this year. She will compete against McGarvey in the May 2022 Democratic primary.
