Here’s what’s happening in Kentucky as many in the political world take a short collective breath before Fancy Farm in August.
- Mitch McConnell looks like he is partly to blame for the lack of U.S. Attorney appointments in the Western and Eastern Districts of Kentucky. Reporter Andrew Wolfson explains the impasse between McConnell and Kentucky’s lone federally elected Democrat Congressman John Yarmuth in an article for the Courier-Journal.
- Robert Kahne of Kypoliticaldata.com has been mapping last week’s primary election results using PDFs from the Board of Elections. Even casual political nerds will find his maps on the Louisville Democratic Mayoral primary and the Northern Kentucky GOP House primary races particularly engrossing.
- Gov. Andy Beshear and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine have jointly submitted an application for nearly $2 billion in federal funding to make improvements to the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor that runs through Northern Kentucky and the City of Cincinnati. If approved, the project will construct a critical companion bridge next to the existing Brent Spence Bridge to improve traffic flow and safety. Improvements will also be made to the interstate network on either side of the bridges throughout an eight-mile corridor from Dixie Highway in Kentucky to the Western Hills Viaduct interchange in Ohio.
- In wake of the Uvalde, Texas, school massacre on Wednesday Congress is again being urged to take action on gun reforms. U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has expressed his sympathy, but it is unclear what if any action will make its way before the upper chamber this year. McConnell is being called out nationally for taking from the gun lobby.
