Louisville Metro Councilperson Cassie Chambers Armstrong is lining up a run for the Kentucky state Senate.
Chambers Armstrong, who Kentucky Fried Politics profiled last year, would run for state Senate Minority Floor Leader Morgan McGarvey’s seat in the event he wins his race for the 3rd Congressional District this November.
The Louisville District 8 council member has filed paperwork with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance to raise money for the special election. She tells Kentucky Fried Politics she is not resigning her seat and would continue to represent District 8 if McGarvey is unsuccessful this fall.
In the event McGarvey wins the seat to replace U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, McGarvey would need to resign his position in the General Assembly and the governor would call a special election to replace him. All those moves could take place at the same time as the Kentucky legislature returns for the 2023 legislative session. Democratic Legislative District chairs in the state Senate district in Louisville would then convene to nominate their candidate for a special election to the 19th District Senate seat in Louisville.
If Chambers Armstrong becomes the Democratic nominee for state Senate, Louisville Metro Council could appoint a replacement or hold a special election. Several Democrats are already lining up support to potentially replace her if the chain reaction of events comes to play out.
Time will tell what happens next, but Chambers Armstrong is activating her network early to put herself in the best position to edge other potential Democrats in receiving the Democratic nomination if McGarvey wins the Congressional race.
