Voters in urban and suburban areas of Kentucky turned out in record numbers defeating a proposed state constitutional change stating there is no right to an abortion, or to fund an abortion.
The defeat of the amendment signals a willingness from Kentuckians to allow some access to abortion in the state as Republican enacted “trigger laws” took effect earlier this year enacting a near total abortion ban.
The amendment rejected by Kentucky voters said: “To protect human life, nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.”
The state legislature will reconvene in January and it is unclear if there will be legislation debated to allow some access to abortions in the commonwealth. The Kentucky Supreme Court is expected to soon hear from two abortion clinics to an abortion ban in the state.
