We’re getting a little more insight into the Republican campaigns for statewide office next year, including Governor and Attorney General and one of the people behind an already announced candidate.
In a live television interview with KET’s Renee Shaw on Election Night, Scott Jennings, a close ally of U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and CNN commentator, said he is “supporting” former U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman for Kentucky Attorney General, adding his company RunSwitch PR “helped launch his campaign.”
The more interesting tidbit came moments later when Jennings said he was a “neutral player in the governor’s race.” He “helped” former UN Ambassador Kelly Craft last year as she considered a run for governor. Jennings said he loves Craft, Attorney General Daniel Cameron, and Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles.
“You’ve got two great candidates in the governor’s race and others, as well,” Jennings said.
Jennings said the GOP gubernatorial primary field includes “people who have done well in their current state office,” and he said there are “people who are looking at the race who are amazing in their own right. Republicans are going to have a large field to choose from.”
The statements could mean that Craft is not entirely out of the hunt for the GOP Governor’s race after spending a year working the state and thinking about running.
